When the Fat Lady Sings

May25

In case you haven’t heard, the Ann Coulter clone, Meme Roth (and wtf is up with her name? Me.Me. ? Ugh) for the Fight Against Obesity declared to Neil Cavuto that Jordin Sparks should not have won American Idol because she is obese.

Watch it after the fold.

First of all, let’s just come to terms with the fact that we are talking about American Idol for shit’s sake. This is a glamorized talent contest whereby the entire nation is invited to vote for the winner. The entire Nation. That explains why this guy was on the show for so long this season and why this guy stayed on the show for any amount of time. I don’t watch American Idol for these reasons, but I did get a chance to watch Doolittle, Sparks and Lewis perform. From what I can tell, and it seems even the judges felt this as well, Melinda Doolittle was clearly the better singer, and she didn’t even make it to the finals. No one knows what makes anyone win on this show. But the idea that Jordin should not have won because she doesn’t look like she is suffering from consumption is insane. Surely. Does this mean that everyone who auditions for American Idol in the future must be subjected to a weigh-in? Where was Me.Me. when Rubin Studdard won? Or is it just women who must be emaciated. That being said, let’s get back to Me.Me. I am all for people eating healthy and getting exercise but this woman is like a body-size dictator. Jordin Sparks is NOT obese. Let me say it again. Jordin Sparks is NOT obese. She is really, really tall but she is not obese.

While Me.Me. looks like she needs a burger and some cake, and well, for someone to pull that stick out of her ass.

Me.Me. is the mouthpiece/owner/operator/chief-whackjobincharge for National Action Against Obesity and from what I can tell she has absolutely no real qualifications for this role, unless you count her disdain for women who are bigger than her. But people with little or no qualifications can still do good things if they are passionate about those things. So what you ask has Me.Me. and her organization done to inform people about the risks of obesity, especially in children? Well, let me tell you.

Boycott Girl Scout Cookies -

“The Girl Scouts sell up to 200 million boxes yearly — that’s about one box for every overweight American.” (Me. Me.)

OH MY GOD! Who would have known that The Girl Scouts isn’t just a bunch of little girls in cute little outfits but is really a cover for a much more nefarious organization which is really out to kill us all through THIN MINTS! Not the Thin Mints!!!

Called for a Boycott of REDBOOK -

“In response to REDBOOK Magazine’s March 2006 Issue and cover story, “We Love Your Body From Size 2 to 20,” anti-obesity advocate MeMe Roth calls for a boycott of the magazine citing its piece as “reckless in the age of obesity.”" (PR Release)

Yes, because loving who you are and the body you have is a really bad idea. I mean it is so much better to hate yourself and then starve yourself and then die. But think of how much prettier you will be. Weeee.

Oh and let’s not forget some good old fashioned Mommy Blaming to really send it home

Fast Facts:

  • Women are at the center of the obesity epidemic. More than 90% of family food-buying decisions are made by women. (bold mine)

And my favorite, The Wedding Gown Challenge -

“Celebration of women who’ve chosen to be fit before, during and well after their wedding day…and an invitation to those who want to.” (from the blog).

This whole idea is so flawed I don’t know if I can begin to pull it apart. First of all, WHAT? What if I’m not married? What if I don’t want to get married? What if I was really fat when I got married? Ohmigod! Ohmigod! Too many questions!

But you know, if you go to the blog and read the latest entry you will truly understand how ludicrous it is to even listen to anything this woman says. I mean she sites Bill O’Reilly as a pillar of health and fitness. Seriously. One for women to aspire to be??? But, but…what if I don’t want to be him? That is just plain weird. It doesn’t even make sense. I mean is he going to wear a wedding dress on August 3? I am so confused. See, I can’t even continue to discuss the wedding dress mess.

The fact that this woman has most of her “news” appearances on Faux news isn’t surprising and is very telling.

I am left wondering what exactly Me.Me. and people like her assume we should look like. If Jordin makes her think of heart disease then what does Kate Bosworth make her think of?

Because there is nothing like a breastplate to communicate health and beauty.

Or Angelina Jolie?

Angelina Jolie is a beautiful woman who does beautiful things but since she had Shiloh she seems to be wasting away. Her legs look like they can barely hold her up and her arms are twigs. Yes, consumption is a good look.

I mean honestly. Me.Me. and her ilk play into a cultural standard that promotes extreme and dangerous body specifications that simply can not and should not be obtained. She talks about obesity in children being akin to child abuse. To a certain degree I feel that a parent who does not provide proper nutrition to their children to the detriment of that child’s health is an abusive parent. As parents it is our duty to provide a safe environment for our children and that includes the food we feed them.

But how can we do that if we don’t know how or we simply don’t have the means?

However, these people never seem to grasp the real issue in all of their blathering about. The discussion should not be about blaming women (and thanks bitch - we need more of that), or boycotting Girl Scout Cookies (!!), or banning REDBOOK for getting on the “We Love All Of You” bandwagon (while having a skinny celebrity on the cover of the issue). More change could occur if maybe, just maybe this discussion was about who in our country is more at risk for becoming obese and WHY?

What if Me.Me. moved to actually educate people at risk, about healthy diet and exercise without the blaming and stupid reliance on aesthetics? No one is talking about the fact that good fresh food is damn hard to get if you live in a poor neighborhood because well the only grocery stores are really far away, in suburban neighborhoods and 7-11 just isn’t up to snuff on their fresh produce section. What if she tried to change that?

But no, since Me. Me. seems to be a shill for the Right, she wouldn’t want to use logic and actual facts to make real, good change. It is all about getting into your wedding dress for the rest of your life and frankly who the fuck doesn’t want to do that?
