Choice

On this day, the 34th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade we have been asked to discuss why we support our right to choose. Well, those words really sum it up, don’t they? “…our right to choose.”

The law allows us the right make choices every day regarding simple, frivolous things. The law also allows us to make choices in complex matters.

  • We can choose what to wear in the morning
  • We can choose what color to make our hair
  • We can choose to wear make-up or not to wear make-up
  • We can choose to drive a car or we can choose to ride a bike instead
  • We can choose to eat broccoli or not to eat broccoli
  • We can choose to get an education or not to get an education
  • We can choose to get a job or not to get a job
  • We can choose to vote and in said voting we can make more choices regarding for whom to vote and for what to vote

See? Pretty basic stuff. Although, now that I look at this random list, I am forced to point out that a few of these items have… hmmm… only recently become lawfully allowed for… women… Oh.

Well, that is bothersome.

We also have the right to visit a doctor. We have the right to visit a doctor and have procedures done that we have decided (possibly via research, discussion with said doctor, over-all view of current situation, health, age, family support level, monetary situation, etc., etc.) are best for us.

For instance, if I have breast cancer I can decide to have a masectomy. If I have a corn on my big toe, I can choose to have it removed. Granted, the two do not compare, except that they are both procedures that I am legally allowed to have done in my own best interest. And I have the right to make that choice.

However there are people out there, worldwide even, who believe that as a woman, I am not smart enough to decide what to do with my reproductive organs. Oddly enough, these same people feel that even though I am a moron, I am however capable of raising many children. And these folks are fighting to force me to do so. As if it makes sense that every woman’s ovary/uterus combo should be the rightful property of the government because we somehow don’t know how to use it! Honestly? My god.

It is amazing that there are still people in the world, WOMEN included, who do not believe that a woman is capable of making decisions about her life and that our only purpose is to breed.

It may seem convoluted but that is briefly why I support Choice.

…especially if the successful treatment could also be used for an abortion. OH NO. Say it aint so! Because it is better to be a non-functioning adult than have an abortion.

And that is what this slate article is about. As always, the life of an unborn cell is ultimately more important than the life of a living, breathing woman.

Keith Olbermann is beautiful. This is long but worth listening too.

Hopefully, this new year will see some changes.
